Taita Taveta governor Andrew Mwadime spent the entire Tuesday being grilled by Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) officials over graft allegations.

The county boss left the commission's offices at Integrity Centre, Nairobi, at 1 pm but could not give details of the meeting.

He was holed up in the meeting for over four hours.

Addressing journalists who had camped outside the offices, Mwadime said the meeting with EACC officials centred around a training programme he had earlier requested the commission to undertake in Taita Taveta.

“I was not summoned by the anti-graft agency on any corruption allegations,” Mwadime said.

However, sources told the Star that EACC is investigating allegations of corruption, procurement irregularities and embezzlement of public funds by officials of the Taita Taveta County Government.

The crimes were allegedly committed to mark celebrations of World War I that took place between November 23 -26, 2022.

“The allegations revolve around conflict of interest, abuse of office, embezzlement of public funds and violation of procurement laws and regulations,” said the source.

The amount allegedly embezzled during commemoration of the World War I is Sh8 million.

The Star further understands that the investigation is at an advanced stage and once complete, the file will be forwarded to the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) with appropriate recommendations.

“Action may also include civil proceedings for individual liability to pay to the government any public funds found to have been stolen or lost,” said the source.

The source added that the matter is one of the various cases of theft of public funds in Taita Taveta County that the commission is currently investigating.
