Kenya’s economy has remained resilient to the drought shocks and is on course to recovery, Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has said.

He said the key interventions put in place by the government will ensure the economic prospects are realized this year.

"The economy is recovering, and in one year, we will have recovered. We thank God for the rains. There is no starvation anymore because of the rains," Gachagua said.

The DP spoke in Runda, Nairobi on Wednesday evening, after condoling with the family of Nyeri MCA Anastacio Gichohi who lost his wife Elizabeth Waigumo last week.

Stating that Kenya's economy is on a recovery path, the Deputy President said the growth prospects remain positive as farmers will have a bumper harvest following the prolonged rainfall.

"We will have a bumper harvest. There will be enough food for consumption and sale. Our food security will improve," he said.

Regarding the ongoing crackdown on illicit brews and drugs abuse in Central Kenya (Kiambu, Murang'a, Nyeri, Nyandarua and Kirinyaga),  Gachagua reiterated that the Kenya Kwanza Administration is committed to fighting alcohol and drug abuse saying that the government would not relent in the fight until sanity is restored.

“My responsibility is to make sure that I have restored the hopes of our generation. The only way to find a solution is to first accept that there is a problem, and we cannot lose a whole generation because of drug abuse. We will win on this”, the DP said.

He said that a solution to the drug menace is in the offing, affirming that a policy to regulate the sale of alcohol and licensing is being formulated by members of the county assemblies.

On the revival of the Coffee, Tea and Milk sub-sectors, Gachagua said that work is in progress while promising farmers that once the programmes to revive the agricultural sectors are set, farmers will start enjoying the fruits of their labour.

In his condolence message, he advocated for strong family relations and appreciated Nyeri leaders for supporting Kabaire.

"I said on inauguration day, family comes first. Take care of your family. When the going gets tough, those are the people that will be left with you," he said.

The DP was accompanied by Nyeri Senator William Wahome and MPs John Kaguchia (Mukurweini), Wambugu Wainaina (Othaya), Njoroge Wainaina (Kieni) and John Kiragu (Limuru).

Nyeri County Assembly Speaker Gichuhi Mwangi, former Mathira MP Peter Weru, Members of the Nyeri County Assembly, and religious leaders were also present.
