Following the melee, one person has died and two others are nursing injuries in the hospital.
Kisumu County police commander Alphonse Wambua said they are investigating the incident.
Wambua further said he had been informed of a fatality but he was yet to get more details.
Chaos erupted after police officers' attempt to stop a PSV vehicle failed forcing them to lob teargas and allegedly fired live bullets hitting three passersby, of the three, a lady was shot and later confirmed dead at Aga Khan Hospital, Kisumu Resident Association chairman Audi Ogada said.
Ogada said two other victims of the shooting are still nursing gunshot wounds at the Kisumu county hospital.
The residents want Kisumu Central police station to condemn the shooting, saying they won't allow the reckless use of live bullets.
