Leading search engine Google has announced an alternative for passwords in new changes.

Through its blog post, Google stated that the company has been working on simpler and safer ways for its customers, and will now be using passkeys to access the company's products.

"While passwords will be with us for some time to come, they are often frustrating to remember and put you at risk if they end up in the wrong hands," Google stated.

Google, in the quest to satisfy their customers, partnered with FIDO Alliance, Apple and Microsoft to work in the generation of passkeys on the platform.

"We’ve begun rolling out support for passkeys across Google Accounts on all major platforms. They’ll be an additional option that people can use to sign in, alongside passwords, 2-Step Verification (2SV)," part of the post read.

Google projects that by next year May, users won't need to use passwords to access the platforms.

"Passkeys let users sign in to apps and sites the same way they unlock their devices: with a fingerprint, a face scan or a screen lock PIN."

The search engine has also explained that, unlike passwords, passkeys are resistant to online attacks like phishing, making them more secure than things like SMS one-time codes.

It said that the effects were made on May 3 for Google Account users who want to try a passwordless sign-in experience.
