Seven more people have been rescued from the suspected Shakahola religious cult in Kilifi.

This now brings the total of those who have been rescued to 18, while four have died.

In the cult, people were allegedly encouraged to fast to death in order to make it to heaven.

While speaking to the media, the husband of one of the victims said his wife had watched the ongoing service on Tv in 2019 and made a decision to attend.

"When he went home in 2021/22, she called and told me that she has gone to 'touch Jesus' and find hope," he narrated.

The family of the victims also called on the government to take charge of the false prophets who take advantage of the vulnerable people who are seeking God.

"We want the government to take charge, our people are being brainwashed," another relative of the victim added.

Mackenzie of Good News International has been preaching to his followers to fast and pray for several days and eventually, a number of them have died due to hunger.

Last month, Mackenzie was arrested by police officers over the death of two minors in similar circumstances but was released on Sh10,000 police bond.

The victims were allegedly being brainwashed by Pastor Mackenzie, according to the police.

“We are going to take legal action against the survivors as they had committed an offence of attempting suicide."
