Lawyer Mutahi Ngunyi has come to the defence of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua over claims surrounding his Mau Mau links.

Ngunyi said at the time he was teaching and training District Officers at the University of Nairobi, the DP was studying Political Science at the institution.

"If he was in the class of 1987, he did not become a DO because his father was a cook. He is Mau Mau Legit. Mwangi WaIria is lying!" he said.

His comment comes hours after former Muranga Governor Mwangi Wa Iria alleged that Gachagua is a son of a cook who used to work for the colonizers.

Speaking during the Azimio La Umoja rally held at Kamukunji on Sunday, the former governor said during the colonizers' time, there were no Mau Mau children who were appointed DOs.

The DP has on many occasions declared that he is the son of Mau Mau, who fought for the liberation of the country.

While in Nyandarua on  Saturday while issuing title deeds to the residents, Gachagua said that  Mau Mau descendants are living in deplorable conditions.

He said the descendants who are now squatters need to be dignified by being issued title deeds.

"The descendants of Mau Mau fighters live in deplorable conditions despite the sacrifice of their grandparents," he said.

“The children of Mau Mau are buried in public cemeteries. These children must get land with title deeds."
