The inquest seeks to unravel the circumstances that led to the deaths of Anyango, a mother who died after excessive bleeding while delivering her twin babies at Mama Lucy Hospital.

In a letter dated March 11, the Clerk of the Senate Jeremiah Nyegenye wanted to know whether a request to refer Anyango to KUTRRH was made by Mama Lucy Kibaki Referral Hospital and details of the date and time the request was received.

“During its deliberations, the committee resolved to seek clarifications from your office on whether a down payment of Sh200,000 was required from the family of the late Anyango to facilitate the referral to KUTRRH,” the letter reads.

The Senate is further seeking to know what policy KUTRRH has concerning referral cases requiring emergency specialized care and/or Intensive Care Unit (ICU) services from public hospitals countrywide.

During a sitting of the Senate held on October 26, 2022, Senator Hamida Kibwana requested a statement from the committee on alleged medical negligence at Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital.

“Standing order 53(3) provides that the Committee may invite the Senator who requested the statement, the relevant CS, and any other person the committee deems necessary during deliberation on the statement,” the letter reads.

Also under investigation is the death of a man named Eddy, who died at the same facility from injuries sustained in a road accident.

The senators want to know the respective dates of their admission, the time they were attended to, and the date and time of their respective deaths.

The senate is also undertaking an investigation into the conduct of the hospital management, with a view to recommending disciplinary measures against persons found culpable.
