Trade and Investments Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria last week engaged in talks with Kenyatta University Vice Chancellor Prof Paul Wainaina on the China Square.

China Square is located at Unicity mall which is a university-owned mall.

In the past weeks, it has taken shoppers by storm attracting criticism from local traders.

During Kuria's talks with Wainaina, Kuria advised him to buy out the lease of Square and hand it over to local traders.

"I have today given an offer to Prof Wainaina the VC Kenyatta University to buy out the lease for China Square, Unicity Mall and hand it over to the Gikomba, Nyamakima, Muthurwa and Eastleigh Traders Association," he said.

But traders do not share Kuria's idea.

When the Star spoke to some traders in Kamukunji market, they said they are not willing to shift to Thika road where Unicity mall is located.

Josephat Waithaka who sells jewellery said the move to Thika road will affect other businesses in Kamukunji market as they depend on each other.

"We will destroy many businesses if we shift from here. For instance, those that sell us tea, and food, and transport us and our goods. It is not just about us. We are customers to them. It is a whole economy," Waithaka said.

Njoki, who sells household items said even if they agree to shift to Unicity mall, they will not shift fully. That they would still hold shops in Kamukunji.

"If the Chinese leave, we can go occupy that space and set up our businesses there. But we will still have shops here as our customers know they always locate us here. That will only be another branch for our businesses," she said.

When the Chinese outlet opened up in Unicity, traders decried that their customers were shifting to China Square where goods were being sold at a cheaper price.

A section of them sought to have the outlet closed.

Currently, China Square is closed as the government tries to settle the matter.
