Names of successful Chief Administrative Secretary (CAS) candidates will be forwarded to the President next week, the Public service commission has said.

The interviews for the positions which started Wednesday are set to end on March 7.

Commission's chairperson Anthony Muchiri told the Star in an interview that the process began smoothly.

"In the next two to three days after the conclusion of this process next week we shall forward the names of suitable individuals," he said.

He did not, however, disclose the number. Muchiri stated that each of the candidates is allocated 30 minutes and undergoes a similar process where they are awarded a score.

He also defended the commission from any claims of preferred individuals as a result of the short time given for the interviews.

"We are not hastening the process for any reason, we have a standard procedure to follow when grilling the candidates and that explains we have several panels here," he stated.

Once the President receives the names, he will pick 22 individuals and designate each of the ministries before sending the list back to Parliament for vetting.

At the National Assembly, relevant committees will vet the particular nominees and later make a report for either adoption or rejection by the House.

If approved, the list will be returned back to the President for appointment

A total of 240 candidates from more than 4,000 who applied were shortlisted.

They are all squaring off for the 22 available slots.

On the first day, 48 candidates were interviewed.

Candidates exuded confidence in being considered for the jobs considered powerful and lucrative in the civil service.

A CAS is the second in command in a Ministry after the Cabinet Secretary.

The office holder is responsible for helping the CS to better coordinate the affairs of their respective ministries.

They also help in coordinating work by the state departments.

Among those who appeared are former Samburu Governor Moses Lenolkulal, former Narok deputy governor Evalyn Aruasa, Wilson Sossion, Simon Mbugua, Dennis Itumbi, Isaac Mwaura, Thomas Letangule Charles Njagua, Margaret Wanjiru, Jeremiah Rutto, Fred Seghor and Vicky Betty.

Those who spoke to the press termed the exercise as fair and "professionally conducted".

Lenolkulal said, "I can say the questions are in-depth, we have given our best and we hope for the good".

Itumbi on his part said he has achieved his expectations by being shortlisted for the interviews.

"By reaching here is a great story of my journey, I am thrilled, happy and I am sure all shall go well," he stated.
