Kakamega woman suffocates to death in sugar plantation fire

An attempt by a 50-year-old woman to prepare her land for planting turned tragic after smoke from a fire she had lit suffocated her.

The incident happened in Eshirubwe sub-location in Matungu, Kakamega County.

Police said Angeline Angola was preparing her farm by burning sugarcane on it Sunday evening.

The fire accidentally spread to a nearby sugarcane plantation and burnt down almost 20 acres suffocating her.

Her body was later removed from the scene by the villagers and taken to her home where police arrived and picked it from.

Elsewhere, a 45-year-old man died in a fire incident in Uthiru area, Nairobi.

The remains of David Mburu Kiberu were discovered long after the Sunday night fire had been contained.

The incident happened in Ndumbuini area, where Kiberu stayed.

The owner of the house said he had gone to check on the progress of the house under construction when he realized the store was on fire and was locked from the inside.

He said he tried to open it in vain. This forced him to call for help from locals who contained the fire and later found the remains of the man.

It is not clear if he died by suicide or if the fire was started by accident.

The remains were taken to the mortuary pending probe and autopsy.

Kiambu police boss Perminus Kioi said they are investigating the incident.
