Amnesty International has faulted social media platform Twitter for failing to protect LGBTQ+ persons.
The rights defender said that a survey they conducted with LGBTQ+ respondents on the platform showed that there was rampant online abuse towards them.
Abuses reported to Twitter management, Amnesty said, were ignored or remained unresolved.
"Sixty per cent of LGBTQ+ organisations and activists surveyed reported an increase in abusive speech since Elon Musk’s takeover as Twitter CEO," they said.
Amnesty said that the other 40 per cent of the LGBTQ+ respondents, reported that they had experienced the same level of abusive and hateful speech as before.
"None of the survey respondents reported a decrease in abusive and hateful speech," they said.
Musk's takeover of Twitter promised to transform the platform into a haven of free speech.
Since October 2022, Musk has been on a spree of making Twitter more 'hardcore'.
Amnesty said that Twitter is also failing to protect organisations and individuals who speak against online violence and abuse of the LGBTQ+ community.
Overall, all respondents reported that they have encountered hateful and abusive speech on Twitter.
