Police are looking for a suspected gang that attacked and stabbed to death a student at Utalii College in Nairobi.
John Chahonyi was stabbed in the chest as he wrestled with a gang that was on a motorcycle and was after his mobile phone.
Witnesses said he and others were at the Traffic headquarters bus stop on Thika Highway on Saturday night waiting to board a matatu to the city centre when he was attacked.
Two suspected criminals arrived on a motorcycle and started to rob those present.
They then reached Chahonyi prompting the struggle before he was stabbed in the chest and stomach.
He was rushed to Guru Nanak Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival. He had lost too much blood, officials said.
Nairobi police boss Adamson Bungei said the gang managed to steal the deceased’s mobile phone and a trouser.
He said the gang rode off after their mission and a hunt on them is ongoing. No arrest has been made so far.
“We advise victims of such robberies to always cooperate because there is nothing is worth your life,” he said.
He added the gang also attacked other pedestrians on the highway in the Saturday night incidents.
A special team of detectives is following up leads on the whereabouts of the gang amid reports they are notorious in the area.
Meanwhile, a woman aged 85 was burnt to death in a fire incident in Gichuiro village in the Gikambura sublocation, Kiambu county.
The body of Mary Wanilku Chege was discovered long after the fire had been contained.
Police said the fire was started by a gas cylinder that exploded burning down the three-bedroomed house.
A 17-year-old boy was fixing the burner of the gas cylinder when it started spinning and later exploded causing the fire.
Property of unknown value was destroyed in the incident.
The body was moved to the mortuary pending further probe, police said.
