A community-based organisation in Kajiado recently held a football tournament with the aim of ending teenage pregnancies in the county.
A Pack A Month held its third annual Girls and Young Women Tournament to start off the new year with positive engagements.
The lobby’s founder Jackline Saleiyan said sports are a great way to protect girls from early pregnancies.
“Since December 31, many youths have engaged in illicit parties. This is one positive way to keep them busy on new year’s eve,” she said.
Saleiyan said the tournament brings together all five wards in Kajiado North subcounty for a friendly football match.
“This time, we saw them go through sexual reproductive health rights talks, menstrual hygiene management, patriotism activities and financial empowerment talks,” she said.
According to Saleiyan, Kajiado North reported more than 1,500 cases of teenage pregnancies as of November 2022.
“We are still struggling with teenage pregnancies not only in Kajiado but countrywide. We hope the activities we are doing will, in their small way, make a difference,” she said.
The participants also engaged in environmental conservation as well, planting 45 trees to help in the realisation of the presidential directive of sustainable forest cover.
Rongai Queens won the tournament for the third time in a row beating Achievers 1 – 0.
Achievers emerged second and Matasia Starlets emerged third.
All participating teams were issued sanitary towels and undergarments alongside position-won awards.
Winners won Sh6,000, a trophy, jerseys, medals and footballs while second place won Sh3,000, balls and medals awarded by MCA Stephen Ngatho.
