Alleged Mathare gang member shot after robbing woman

A suspect was badly injured by police on Wednesday night as he tried to flee a crime scene. 

This is after he attacked a middle-aged woman along Muratina road in Mathare, Nairobi.

The suspect is part of a three-man gang terrorising residents in the Mathare, Pangani and Huruma areas.

The woman was attacked while walking home and left sprawled by the roadside, screaming for help.

After taking away the victim’s mobile phone and other valuables, the suspects walked away casually towards the Mlango Kubwa area. 

It was members of the public who raised the alarm after witnessing the attack.

Police based at Pangani police station were on patrol and responded to the distress calls.

The machete-wielding suspects knowing that the police were on their trail scattered towards Mathare’s Redeemed Gospel Church.

When the police caught up with them, one of the suspects turned back and attacked the corporal leading the chase with a machete, missing his jugular vein.

The officer opened fire, wounding the suspect as his two accomplices dropped their machetes and fled.

Three machetes, daggers, two swords and other crude weapons used by the suspects were recovered by the detectives. 

Also recovered from the fallen suspect was $100(Sh12,000) suspected to have been stolen from a victim of crime.

Meanwhile, the suspect's body was moved to City Mortuary pending identification and postmortem.
