A woman, 30, has been arrested while trying to smuggle bhang and cigarettes into police cells in Nakuru county.

Police arrested the suspect after she unsuccessfully attempted to deliver the drugs to a man held at Gilgil police station, Gilgil subcounty on Sunday.

The incident was recorded at the same station at 7.45 am as recovery of narcotic drug/arrest of a prisoner at report office incident report.

Police said today at around 6.20 am at Gilgil police station, the lady requested two police officers on duty to allow her give a loaf of bread and a cup of tea to a male detainee.

She alleged that the man was her husband, who had been arrested on November 25 at 11:00 am for the offence of housebreaking and stealing.

Police said the woman panicked and became suspicious when the officers started inspected the food she had brought as a matter of procedure.

This prompted the officers to have a keen interest on her package. They took the loaf of bread and noted that the seal had been tampered with.

"The officers took a further step to open the bread only to find that the top most slices were intact but at the middle the bread had a hole stuffed with 5 rolls of cannabis sativa, 5 sticks of cigarettes and a match box," a police report scene by the Star reads in part.

Police said the woman then pleaded with the officers to let her free after she realised she has been cornered.

She even even attempted to bribe them with a promise of paying the officers Sh2,000 for them to look the other way.

"The police officers immediately arrested the lady and upon further search 80 rolls of bhang were found, hidden in her undergarments," police said.

The station's OCS and DCI Gilgil personnel visited the scene and necessary action was taken. All recoveries were kept as exhibits.

OCS Gilgil police station had taken up the matter and the woman will be arraigned in court tomorrow.
