Second Lady Dorcas Rigathi and Kenya Red Cross society on Friday flagged off relief food donated by various religious organizations to drought-stricken families in Narok county.

The event happened at the Kenya Red cross society headquarters in South C, Nairobi in the presence of the society's secretary general Asha Mohammed.

"I stand here as a human being who is touched by the affliction of others to appeal to you, Kenyans, so that we can stand together and be our brothers' keeper and rise to the need of saving lives of those in need,” Dorcas said.

The food will benefit 2,500 drought-stricken families in the county.

Asha said that with the many crises at the global level affecting many of those who have supported Kenya in the past, home-grown solutions are what will help the country save her own people from starving.

The governor of the Kenya Red Cross society, Geoffrey Kipng'etich thanked the second lady and all those who made donations for their generosity.

He said the kind gesture would inspire many others to also do something and support fellow brothers and sisters in this time of need.

The drought situation in the country has continued to worsen with reports indicating that 4.35 million Kenyans are going to bed hungry.

With the intensifying drought situation, the needs of communities continue to grow and so is the urgency with which people need humanitarian aid in form of food, water and health services.

The Kenya Red Cross society said it is open to partnering with individuals or organizations to support logistics and ensure aid reaches the most vulnerable.

Subsequently, food aid will be dispersed to Isiolo, Makueni and Nyeri copunties.
