Njuri Ncheke council of elders on Tuesday distanced themselves from endorsing Azimio presidential candidate Raila Odinga.

The elders led by the council's secretary general Josephat Murangiri, said they did not give Raila the assurance that he had votes from their people.

"Hatukumpatia Raila kura za waMeru. Tulimpatia ruhusa ya kuongea na waMeru na (William) Ruto hakuja hapa tukamkataa. Ata yeye akija hapa tutampatia vile vile," Murangiri said.

This is loosely translated to, "We did not give Raila votes from the Meru people. We gave him permission to talk to the people and President-elect William Ruto did not come here for us to deny him. If he comes we will permit him too."

Murangiri added that if Ruto becomes President, the elders will work with him.

"If Ruto becomes the next President, we will work with him... All Kenyans are Njuri Ncheke's children."

They further committed to working with Meru Governor-elect Kawira Mwangaza.

"The first Meru Governor, I want to thank her and assure her that we as Njuri Ncheke will work with her as is our policy to work with the reigning County government," he said.

Murangiri urged Kawira to prioritize the County projects for the sake of her electorates, pointing out that her predecessors did the same.

He praised Azimio for seeking to settle the presidential election disputes legally, saying it was the wish of the elders.

The SG urged both Raila's camp and Kenya Kwanza to accept the verdict of the Supreme Court.

"The results from Supreme Court belong to Kenyans, so let us accept them."

He further urged Kenyans to embrace peace and keep calm as they wait for the aforementioned verdict.

Murangiri appealed to the next government to embrace peace and serve all citizens equally and fairly.

"Whoever will clinch the next government, because the next government will be decided by the Court, I appeal to them not to victimize those who worked with the outgoing government," he said.
