The number of nomination slots in Senate, National Assembly and County Assemblies will be known after conclusion of all pending elections, IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukati has said.

The allocation of seats, he said, can only be done once the commission conducts elections in Kitui Rural, Kacheliba and Pokot South and Rongai constituencies on August 29, 2022.

Elections for members of county assemblies will be held in Nyanki West ward of North Imenti in Meru county and Kwa Njenga ward in Embakasi South, Nairobi.

"The commissioners want this election done like yesterday because it is slowing us down also, they need to sit down and calculate formula of party lists and do the allocation, they cannot do without these elections happening," Chebukati said.

Voting was postponed in those areas in what the commission said was due to a mismatch in ballot papers and court orders.

The commission Wednesday last week postponed the polls yet again on grounds that commission staff had grown afraid after some were attacked at Bomas of Kenya ahead of the declaration of presidential results on August 15.

But on Monday, IEBC struck a deal with candidates in the the affected areas for voting to be held Monday next week.

"This also helps to determine the strength of parties in parliament and county assemblies...the commissioners also want to finalize on other things, we want to dispose on this election once and for all,” Chebukati said during the meeting at Bomas.

The National Assembly has 12 nomination slots up for grabs, Senate has 20 (where 16 are specifically reserved for women) while the remaining four are shared among the youth and persons with disabilities.

The formula for sharing the 12 seats in the National Assembly is calculated such that the number of seats attained by a party is divided by 337 which is total number of single member constituencies multiplied by 12.

The same formula applies in the Senate.

Currently, United Democratic Alliance (UDA) has 138 MPs, ODM (85), Jubilee (28), Wiper (24), ANC (7), Ford Kenya (6), UDM (5) and DAP-Kenya (5).

In Senate, UDA which bagged 22 out of the 47 senators, will get a larger share of the seats followed by ODM which got 13. Jubilee has four, Wiper Democratic Movement (3) and UDM (2).

Among those fronted by ODM for nomination in the National Assembly are John Mbadi and Umulkher Mohamed and Irene Mayaka while UDA submitted a list of 12 which features Jackson Kosgei, Teresia Mwangi, Abdisirat Khalif, Dorothy Muthoni, Joseph Iraya and Cate Waruguru.

In the Senate, UDA has party leader Veronica Maina, outgoing Narok woman representative Soipan Tuiya, Miraj Abdulrahman, Gloria Orwaba, Joyce Korir, Maureen Mutinda, Karen Nyamu and Peris Tobiko.

Jubilee submitted Margaret Kamar for the position while Wiper has its secretary general Shakila Abdalla both of whom are assured of the slots.

ODM has its election board chair Catherine Mumma topping the list of Senate nominees followed by Beatrice Oyomo, Hamida Kibwana and Betty Montet.

Outgoing Murang'a woman representative Sabina Chege is assured of making it back to the House after Jubilee forwarded her name to IEBC for nomination.
