AU Commission chair Moussa Faki condemns Nigeria violence

He urged all parties to privilege dialogue in order to de-escalate the situation.

The Chairperson of the African Union Commission Moussa Faki Mahamat has strongly condemned the ongoing violence in Nigeria which escalated on October 20.

The Nigerians intensified their protest on Tuesday against the disbanded police unit Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) which led to several deaths and injuries.

In the statement released by spokesperson Ebba Kalondo, Faki appealed to all political and social actors to reject the use of violence and respect human rights and the rule of law.

 

 He further urged all parties to privilege dialogue in order to de-escalate the situation and find concrete and durable reforms.

Faki has also welcomed the decision by the federal government to disband SARS as an important step in this direction.

He also reiterated the African Union’s commitment to continue to accompany the government and people of Nigeria in support of a peaceful solution.

Nigerians authorities have also been encouraged to conduct an investigation to ensure the perpetrators of acts of violence are held to account.

The chairperson offered his sincere condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and wishes a speedy recovery to the injured.

This comes hours after said that it was monitoring Nigeria following police brutality against citizens holding protests.

AU secretary-general Antonio Guterres condemned the escalation of violence witnessed on Tuesday at the Nigerian capital Lagos, where a number of people lost their lives.

 

At the same time, Guterres sent his condolences to the bereaved families and wished the injured quick recovery.
