Kisii residents recover body parts after woman drowned

The woman drowned late Tuesday in River Keiyani after a rickety bridge gave way.

Residents of Etago, South Mugirango in Kisii Thursday evening recovered body parts suspected to be of a woman who slid off a bridge and fell into River Keiyani.

Gladys Oroo, 45, was returning home late Tuesday from the farm in the neighbouring Transmara when the rickety bridge gave way.

Villagers said she was in the company of other women when she tripped and fell into the water and drowned.

Thursday afternoon, Kereu Nyasasa, one of the residents told the Star they managed to recover only parts of the lower abdomen after a grueling search.

Other body parts were still missing by nightfall after hours of scoring through the swollen river.

"We are still optimistic that the other part body parts will be found by tomorrow [Friday]," he said.

The residents spoke of delays in the recovery efforts after disaster officials from the county failed to turn up.

The county government, he said, did not respond to calls for help since the incident happened.

"Up to now there is no response still, we are appealing to the national government to help," he said.

Separately, the body of a middle-aged man was retrieved from a well after three days of a grueling search.

Abel Nyakundi's body was retrieved from a borehole in Kitutu Chache South .

The deceased had gone missing for a while sparking a search.
