The Kenya Ports Authority Managing Director Captain William Ruto has directed port users to remove all equipment not in use from the port premises.

Ruto said the operators have 14 days before KPA begins a clean-up exercise to free the yard area.

The Authority said this will ensure they maximise the use of all space, which will enhance safety, as well as service delivery.

"Owners are hereby notified and required to make arrangements for their evacuation from the Port premises within 14 days from the date of this Notice, i.e by close of business on 7th May 2024," the statement reads.

He insisted that failure to do this would result in the disposal of the said equipment.

The Authority added that before the equipment is removed, all payments owed to KPA must be cleared by the owners.

"Please note that in the event of your failure to comply with this Notice, the Ports Authority will dispose of the equipment, long-stay containers, and any of the aforementioned items in accordance with the Kenya Ports Authority Act to defray any charges due in their respect, without any further reference to the owners."

KPA said an equipment survey exercise conducted in the Port of Mombasa revealed that privately owned idle equipment, stalled vehicles, tools, and long-stay empty containers are lying idle within the port premises and in sick bays.

"A schedule listing of all the overstayed empty containers may be obtained from the office of the Manager of Container Operations," KPA said.
