Three schools in Lamu county will benefit from a donation of 200 solar power kits donated through the Lighting An African Family (LAAF) project.

The donation included battery packs, solar panels, and lights which will aid learning without the limitations of unreliable electricity supply.

The project initiated by global renewable energy solutions provider, Bluetti, donated the solar power kits to Manda Manewi Secondary school, as well as the Manda Airport Primary and Secondary schools on Lamu Island.

Speaking at Manda Airport School where demonstrations on how to use the kits was conducted as well as the official handing over ceremony, the sales manager, Bluetti Kenya, Allen Yan reiterated their commitment to supporting underprivileged African communities, through the LAAF project.

He said that through the project, they aim to provide millions of African families with access to clean energy.

“By donating these lighting products to Manda Schools, we hope to improve the learning environment and empower the students in underserved areas with resources and opportunities that will help propel them for a better future," Yan said.

The three schools grapple with the challenges of remote geography, lack of clean water supply, bad roads and unreliable power supply.

This has in many instances led to energy shortages for schools and the community at large.

Manda Secondary School Principal, James Kimemia said the donations will have a transformative impact on the schools.

He said the Solar lighting products will assist the students with stable light to study during the night and will also help them to complete given assignments.

“This generous donation will open doors to a better future. We are immensely grateful to Bluetti for their commitment to improving education in our community," Kimemia stated.

According to a community leader identified as, Chief Yussuf, a steady power supply has hindered various aspects of communal life in Lamu Island and this has affected daily activities in the community, but the donation will significantly reduce that.

“Families will now have access to reliable lighting in their homes and it will increase safety and aid other basic electricity needs of the community, especially during the night.”
