Mororo area on Nairobi-Garissa Road flooded – KeNHA

Motorists plying the Nairobi-Garissa Road have been asked to exercise caution when approaching the area around Mororo.

The Kenya National Highways Authority said the section of the road around that area has flooded owing to rising water levels at the Tana River Bridge caused by ongoing rainfall.

"The persisting rainfall portends further water rise which could affect other previously damaged road sections," KeNHA said in an alert Friday evening.

"Motorists are, therefore, urged to exercise caution as they approach Madogo, Konapunda, and Mororo sections of the A3 Road to Garissa."

The authority said a contractor is on standby at the site to address any issues as the Authority monitors the situation closely to ensure road accessibility.

The alert came as the Kenya Meteorological Department issued a forecast saying the Upper Tana River Basin would receive heavy rains of up to 50mm till Saturday morning.

The Upper Tana River Basin covers areas such as Tana River, Kitui, Machakos, Embu, Kirinyaga, Tharaka Nithi, Isiolo, Laikipia, Nyeri and Murang'a.

It also covers Meru and Embu where the forecast said some areas were to receive rains of between 80-100mm over the same period.

On Thursday, the Kenya Red Cross also advised residents of Thiba town in Mwea West Subcounty in Kirinyaga to consider relocating to safer locations after the area experienced flooding following heavy rainfall.

"The town was severely affected, resulting in impassable roads and shops submerged in water. Our team is actively monitoring the situation for any developments and has advised residents in flood-prone areas to remain vigilant," the Red Cross said on X.

Most areas across the country are currently experiencing enhanced rainfall as the planting season gains momentum.

In its forecast covering April 2 to April 8, the Met Department said Kenyans should prepare for heavy rains across the country with potential floods in at least seven regions.

"Expect widespread rainfall across the country, with heavy downpours forecasted for Central Highlands, Western Kenya, Rift Valley, Southeast lowlands, Coast, Northeast, and Northwest regions. Stay prepared 4 potential flooding in these areas," the agency said in a statement on X.
