Anglican Church of Kenya Mt Kenya South Diocese Bishop Charles Muturi has rejected a job offer from the Kiambu County government.

Governor Kimani Wamatangi had appointed him to the Kabete municipal council board.

Bishop Muturi was scheduled to undergo a vetting process on April 9, before the sectoral committee of planning and urbanisation at the Kiambu County Assembly.

According to a letter by the diocesan administrative secretary to the clerk of the Kiambu county assembly, Bishop Mturi has declined the offer.

The letter stated that pursuant to the provisions of the provincial constitution of the Anglican Church of Kenya the resolutions of the ACK synod and after consultation with the diocesan chancellor, a sitting Bishop cannot (by ecclesiastical rules)  hold a public office.

The letter further stated that the bishop politely declined the offer to submit his documents or appear before the assembly committee.

Wamatangi had last month nominated 74 people including the bishop for approval by the county assembly.

Kiambu Senator Karungo wa Thangw'a in response commended the bishop for declining the nomination.

He urged the office of the governor to explore the vast talent pool within the church community or elsewhere to identify another suitable candidate for the role.

"Kiambu county is home to a considerable number of unemployed graduates and young professionals who possess the requisite skills and dedication to excel in such positions," he said.

He however said the bishop has played a pivotal role in uplifting the community, particularly in his endeavours to support the boy child, combat illicit brews and drug abuse and foster development within the church and country.
