Tourism and Wildlife CS Alfred Mutua has called on county governments to develop cultural experiences to attract tourists, benefit local economies and empower communities.

Mutua cited Bungoma’s rich cultural heritage brought to life by the local communities’ songs, dances and food as some of the areas that could be attractive to tourists if properly harnessed.

Mutua was received by Bungoma Governor Ken Lusaka and the county leadership.

The visits aim to revitalise the tourism sector by forging partnerships with county governments.

CS Mutua said his vision is to unlock the untapped tourism potential of every corner of the country.

He said there is a need for collaboration between the national and county governments to develop infrastructure, promote conservation efforts, and create sustainable tourism initiatives.

The CS cited Nabuyole falls within Webuye saying it is a gem waiting to be discovered.

"The falls and the area around it could be developed as a hiking site. We are ready to support the county government in such a venture," he said.

Mutua promised collaboration and support in the improvement of infrastructure including the construction of the Matulo airstrip, support for the Luhya cultural and food festival and marketing of the 'Kamabeka' dance as an authentic cultural offering.

"Western Kenya boasts a rich cultural heritage, including traditional music, dance and ceremonies. Leveraging these cultural assets can create unique tourism experiences and generate revenue for local communities," he added.

Mutua emphasised the importance of protecting the region's rich biodiversity and wildlife habitats while harnessing them for responsible tourism development.

He said Tourism in Western Kenya presents immense potential for economic growth and development.

However, the CS added that it faces numerous challenges which are hindering full realisation of its potential.

"The region lacks adequate hospitality infrastructure to accommodate the growing number of tourists. Investing in the construction of hotels, lodges and guesthouses will enhance the visitor experience and prolong their stay in Western Kenya," he said.

The CS visited the Sangalo Cultural Centre and Buteyo Miti Park Conservancy.
