Prime Cabinet Secretary and Foreign and Diaspora Affairs CS Musalia Mudavadi has condemned the terrorist attack in Russia that left scores dead.

The attack at a concert in Moscow early Friday night left 100 people dead while at least 60 remain in a serious condition.

Gunmen opened fire inside Crocus City Hall, a suburb in Moscow, killing many in a shooting spree, Russian intelligence said.

Mudavadi described the attack as barbaric and counter to all fundamental principles of the shared humanity.

"We convey our deep sympathies to all those affected by this heinous act. My brother and counterpart, Sergey Viktorovich Lavrov, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, be assured that Kenya strongly and unequivocally condemns this atrocious act and stands with you in mourning the loss of innocent lives," he said in a statement on Saturday.

The Prime CS said acts of terrorism and violent extremism are unjustifiable and inexcusable.

"They are an assault on humanity’s collective moral consciousness. In these difficult circumstances, Kenya stands in solidarity with the resilient Peoples and Government of Russia and hopes for a quick recovery for all affected by this vile attack."

During the attack, a large fire broke out in the building, causing part of the roof near the theatre to collapse, but is now said to be mostly extinguished.

Islamic State (IS) claimed responsibility for the attack.

The US said there was no reason to doubt this claim, with the White House saying it warned Russia of a potential attack on "large gatherings" in Moscow earlier this month.

Russia has not commented, the BBC reported.

Russian news agencies said four people involved in the attack are among 11 detained.

Ukraine - currently at war with Russia - has denied any involvement.

Video footage obtained by the BBC shows the attackers firing indiscriminately at screaming civilians trying to run away while several explosions can be heard.

Security has tightened with events cancelled across Russia as the county's national guard searches for the attackers.

President Putin has not addressed the nation directly, but according to a deputy has wished those injured a speedy recovery.

Security has been stepped up in Moscow at key installations including airports and train stations.
