Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki has today directed that all distilleries not within the list of those allowed to operate be shut down in 10 days.

This is part of the measures put in place in the fight against the sale and distribution of illicit brew in the country

The CS, speaking on Wednesday, said that the fight against illicit brew has become a big problem for the nation and there is a need for the measures to be implemented to curb the problem.

"The trade, consumption, and abuse of illicit alcohol, narcotics, drugs and psychotropic substances now rank as one of the five key national security threats, which include terrorism, banditry and livestock rustling, cultural, religious and political extremism, and climate change. For this reason, the government has adopted a national security posture in its management of this scourge," Kindiki said.

The closure of these distilleries, according to the CS will help in controlling the quality of alcohol produced and consumed.
