Man charged with conning Kenyans using Sonko's name

A 29-year-old man accused of impersonating former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko and conning unsuspecting members of the public has been charged before a Nairobi court. 

Newton Kengere appeared before Milimani senior principal magistrate Gilbert Shikwe and denied the charges of cybersquatting. 

He is alleged to have created a Facebook account using the name Hon. Mike Mbuvi Sonko Rescue Loans without the authority of the Former governor.

The prosecution did not oppose his release on bail but urged the magistrate to consider the nature of the offence. 

Kengere was arrested in Kisii's Riokindo ward by DCI officers after investigations.

He is accused of swindling the public money in a fake educational loan scheme.

He pleaded for lenient bond terms stating that he was from a humble background. 

The magistrate released him on a cash bail of Sh300,000.

The case will be mentioned on January 29.
