A Kenya Defense Forces soldier and two civilians were apprehended at Windridge - Chai Estate in Juja for their involvement in the theft of a firearm.

The incident occurred in Kirinyaga on November 25, 2023, when a licensed firearm holder reported his weapon stolen.

The soldier, stationed at the KDF Kahawa Garrison, was detained alongside his female companion and another male suspect on Saturday.

This arrest was made possible by a joint operation conducted by the DCI Juja and DCI Headquarters.

Following the arrest, the trio was escorted to Wang'uru Police Station in Mwea East, the jurisdiction where the firearm theft was initially reported.

The incident began when the male victim, driving his Toyota Prado, visited his land in Kianda, a region within the county.

During his journey, he found himself stranded for several hours on a murram road due to his vehicle getting stuck.

Members of the public came to his aid pushing his car out of a slippery ditch by 8.30 pm, where he returned home.

On arrival, the 56-year-old realized that his mini CZ loaded with 14 rounds of ammunition which he had secured in his car during the recovery efforts was missing.

He returned to the scene the same night searching for the firearm until 10pm but could do little to trace anything in the dark and trampled muddy passage from an ongoing downpour, he said.

He asked around the neighbourhood the following morning and could not get help.

He reported the matter and police stepped in, exploring all intelligence leads until the recovery of the firearm in Juja, Kiambu County.

Investigations are underway to determine how six rounds of ammunition that were missing from the firearm were expended.

Police suspect the weapon had been used in crimes.
