KNEC CEO David Njeng'ere has said Standard Eight learners who had registered for the 2023 KCPE exams but failed to sit will get a second chance in 30 days.
Njeng'ere spoke on Thursday at Mitihani House in Nairobi where Education CS Ezekiel Machogu is releasing the KCPE 2023 results.
"The council shall organize for KCPE candidates who had registered but were unable to sit their exams, to do so after 30 days," he said.
Machogu said the 9,354 candidates will be given special exams in January.
Njeng'ere noted that since 1985, 39 cohorts have sat the KCPE Examinations, with two major reviews being made on the assessment tests used.
"Since inception, the KCPE Examination has been offered to over 26,316,037 candidates in the last 39 years. The candidature has been diverse, with candidates of refugee status and other non-citizens within Kenya sitting the examination," he said.
The Knec boss said from 2005 to 2008 KCPE was also offered to South Sudan nationals of the Kauda mountains region. In total, 103,779 non-citizens have been certified after sitting KCPE.
Similarly, about 25,000 candidates with disabilities have sat KCPE Examinations over the 39 years it was offered.
He said the gender parity of KCPE candidates in 1985 was at 59.2% and 40.8% for male and female candidates respectively.
"This ratio increased over the years and from 2013 to 2022, both genders were at par. However, in 2023, gender parity has dropped with female candidates being at 48.70% and male candidates at 51.3%," he said.
Further, he appreciated all the field officers who rendered their services to ensure the successful administration of the 2023 KCPE examination.
"I wish to particularly mention, for the appreciation of the Cabinet Secretary, the Vihiga County Education team for their exemplary work in doing e-registration of 2023 KCPE candidates. Sir, the Vihiga County Education team, led by the County Director of Education David Koech, adhered most to the registration guidelines for the 2023 KCPE examination," he said.
As a result, he said the county had no late registration cases.
He urged all the other counties to emulate this exemplary leadership.
Njeng'ere also thanked the 28,533 KCPE centre managers who have ensured that both KCPE and KPSEA happen in the centres seamlessly, despite the adverse weather conditions that were experienced in some parts of the country.
He said KNEC engaged the services of 5,692 examiners during the marking of the English Composition, Kiswahili Insha, and Kenyan Sign Language Composition.
He said as a show of appreciation, KNEC has issued certificates of appreciation to all the examiners engaged in marking KCPE Compositions and Insha.
