Azimio principal Kalonzo Musyoka now claims police had express instructions to shoot Raila Odinga in the legs during an anti-government rally at Kamukunji grounds on July 12.

Kalonzo said the motive was not to kill but to injure him and other Azimio leaders who would have attended the rally.

But acting on intelligence, Kalonzo said, Raila called off the rally.

"And you actually called off the demonstrations. I was marooned somewhere in Wote. And it looked like that particular day, police had express instructions to look and hunt for Azimio leaders and kill them and maim them," he said.

"In fact, I'm told, the aim was that were you to go to Kamukunji, the aim was to shoot you in the legs, not be killed but shot in the legs. Kalonzo akionekana miguu, Kioni miguu."

The Wiper leader was speaking in Emali Machakos county during the funeral service of a protester who was allegedly shot dead by police on during the anti-government demos.

Raila and other Azimio leaders were also present during the event.

On July 12, Raila canceled the Kamukunji rally saying the decision was arrived at after they received intelligence that police planned to use live bullets on demonstrators.

"Yesterday night, we received intelligence of a very heinous plan by Kenyan Kwanza to ferry goons who would attack peaceful attendees of our rally in Kamukunji. These goons had express order to shoot directly to the crowd while enjoying police protection," Raila said.

"Early this morning, our crew who had been sent to set up the stage at Kamukunji were attacked and their equipment damaged. Some were arrested. In line with the intelligence we received, armed goons have this afternoon descended on Kamukunji and shot indiscriminately into the crowd," he added.

Despite the cancellation of the rally at Kamukunji grounds, Azimio supporters in other parts of the country held demonstrations during which master Brian Mulika Muendo (18) was allegedly shot dead by a police officer in Emali.

The Azimio brigade at his funeral called on police Inspector General Japhet Koome to resign for what they termed as excessive use of force by police on protesters.

"What was the intention of one Inspector General of police by the name Koome who we demand if he has a conscience to resign? That is what they do in democracies," Kalonzo said.

The government has since exonerated police from allegations of extrajudicial killings during the protests.

Interior CS Kithure Kindiki said in a statement on July 25 that those pushing the extrajudicial narrative are the same individuals who should bear the greatest responsibility for the wave of violence that befell the country during the demos.

"It has been established that licensed and unlicensed civilian firearms supplied by the masterminds of the recent violence were used to kill or injure civilians and security personnel, and the blame shifted to security officers," he said.
