The President William Ruto-led administration has embarked on a journey to revamp the Postal Corporation of Kenya (PCK).

Cabinet Secretary for Information, Communication and the Digital Economy Eliud Owalo on Monday revealed that the government has started to deliver medicine using postal services.

"Posta is delivering medical-related supplies to medical facilities. This includes scaling up citizen access to essentials such as mosquito nets in collaboration with Kenya Medical Supplies Agency," he said.

The CS revealed that the contract between Kemsa and PCK is about Sh295 million.

In the last Financial Year 2022-23, Owalo highlighted that PCK achieved a Sh600 million for logistics services offered to the Government.

He also noted that PCK has expanded its EMS (Expedited Mail Services) offering and increased new contracts.

"These new contracts will see an increase from Sh600 million in FY 2022-2023 to Sh900 million in the current year," Owalo added.

Revealing more plans, the CS stated that PCK has completed the first cycle of the 50 Trainer of Trainers (ToT) program.

As a result, 500 Posta employees will become the first-line e-commerce ambassadors at the Post office and within high-market density areas.

"Posta will be equipped to build e-commerce capacity for traders and offer logistical services nationwide," Owalo noted.

In terms of e-government delivery, PCK has generated revenue of over Sh200 million from the delivery of passports across the country.

As part of digitalizing government services on E-citizen, CS Owalo added that Posta is working with the Department of Immigration to offer a one-stop service from ordering a passport to tacking last-mile delivery as a service.

By December 2023, the CS noted a postal address/code will be available on the E-Citizen portal in line with the National Addressing implementation plan and digitising postal services.

During his vetting by the National Assembly in October 2022, Owalo identified the revitalization of the Postal Corporation of Kenya as among his key priorities.

"This corporation was once literally the jewel in the government’s crown dozed off, ahead of the technological advances of the past few decades. It has been left behind in the critical revolution that is the engine of the new world order," he said then.

‘Posta’ as it is famously known by most Kenyans dates from the early years of the 19th century.
