The Directorate of Criminal Investigations has begun an investigation into a suspected criminal syndicate involved in the trafficking of 51 Ethiopians.

This is after two 14-seater matatus were intercepted on Monday while carrying the foreigners.

The DCI's Anti-Human Trafficking unit narrowed in on a driver and a public service vehicle suspected of being used in the crimes.

On Monday, detectives got an alert that illegal immigrants who had been spotted in Turkana County were being transported toward the Kenya-Uganda border by Kitale-bound PSVs.

They chased the vehicles to the Makunga shopping centre along Kitale-Kapenguria highway where they intercepted them.

On board were 43 adults and eight children, all aged between nine months and 40 years.

The vehicles belong to different saccos.

DCI has established that the organisation facilitates the entry and exit of people trafficked from Ethiopia to Uganda through Kenya.

Their destination is to be in South Africa.

"Further investigations ongoing to unearth the entire modus operandi of the criminal ring, as well as bring to book the key players in the trade," the Directorate said on Wednesday.
