Suspect succumbs to injuries in Machakos after mob attack

A suspected thug succumbed to his injuries after he was subjected to mob injustice in Athi River, Machakos county.

The 28-year-old victim reportedly died while he was being rushed to hospital by officers from Athi River police station.

Witnesses said the man sustained serious injuries after members of the public pounced on him during a botched robbery within the shopping centre on Monday night.

"The gang unsuccessfully attempted to rob a woman at a shop in Makadara shopping centre on Friday. The same gang was spotted when they returned to the centre last night prompting their attack after they were identified," a witness told the Star on Tuesday.

The witness said the thugs escaped into the night after members of the public responded to the woman’s alarm after she was attacked.

"Two were arrested, while three others escaped into the darkness," he said.

The suspects in custody are being held at the Athi River police station as police continue with investigations. 

Area subcounty police commander Mary Njoki said the man was found by police officers lying unconscious with a deep cut on his throat.

Independent sources revealed that the deceased was part of a six-man gang that terrorised residents within Athi River and its environs.
