Lawyer Ahmednasir Abdullahi now says that any Kenyan leader blaming cartels for corruption in their area of work is incompetent.

According to Ahmednasir, such leaders are using the name of cartels to defend themselves.

He went on to say that the other reason they could be doing that is because they could still be deciding, which faction of the alleged cartels to work with.

"If you hear someone in a position of authority in Kenya blaming "cartels" for the rot/corruption in his area of jurisdiction, then that blame game tells you two things about that person: (a) the person is incompetence and clueless and uses the phrase "cartels" as a shield (b) That person is still undecided about which of the many cartels to join/patronise," he said on Sunday.

The lawyer has been critical of the current government, despite having backed President William Ruto's bid in 2022.

Ahmednasir's remarks came after Health Cabinet Secretary Susan Nakhumicha assured that she will do away with the cartels in the Kenya Medical Supplies Agency (KEMSA) and the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF).

Speaking at Sirende Catholic church during fundraising for Sirende Mission Hospital, Nakhumicha said she will deal with anyone involved in the mess at her ministry, regardless of who they are.

She vowed not to fear anybody, especially cartels who want to sabotage her.

CS Nakhumicha, however, did not reveal who the cartels were.

A few weeks ago, the CS suspended the Kemsa board and announced a fresh team led by Irungu Nyakera.

She also suspended senior managers at the NHIF, as she seeks to clean house, to ensure proper service delivery.
