Second Lady Dorcas Rigathi has urged the clergy across the country to open doors for the less privileged in society.

Speaking during the Lower Eastern regional interdenominational prayers in Machakos County on Thursday, Dorcas said some of the children were in the streets for lack of food and guidance.

"We are opening churches so that we feed destitute; street children to come to eat in those churches and mosques. Some of them are in the streets due to lack of food," Dorcas said.

She addressed more than 4,000 men of the cloth from Machakos, Makueni and Kitui counties.

Tens of imams from the three counties also attended the event organised by the United Clergy Alliance in collaboration with the County Government of Machakos and the Office of the Spouse Deputy President.

Dorcas said some of the street children can return to school if they are fed.

She dispelled laziness among not only the clergy, but all Kenyans stating that it is what has made most Kenyans poor.

"If you don't work, you must also not eat. Let's work, laziness has made us poor," Dorcas said.

"Today I came to talk about the Office of the Spouse of DP. That's why I'm everywhere. Mimi sio sanamu ya kuwekwa kwa ofisi, I have to work."

She said her office's role was; taking care of widows and orphans, people living with disabilities, and the boy child alongside chaplaincy and family values.

Dorcas, however, said the boychild was her main priority.

"These boys are out there for many reasons. Some are graduates, hold masters, are engineers and are in rehabilitation centres for frustrations, and lack of employment. They are on the streets," Dorcas said.

"Whenever a father dies in a home, boys become heads of families, drop out of school, get to towns to seek jobs and due to challenges they face, they get into drugs and such vices. We need to go rescue the boy child," Dorcas said.

Dorcas said the alcohol and drug business was a disease like any other.

She said the situation was a health issue stating that most of those into drugs move from alcohol to mental illness.

"Drug barons must stop it. They can't keep killing our children," she said.

She said every primary, and secondary school and TVETs must have a Chaplain to instil family values in our children.

"Help us remove those young people from the gutter. As a mother, I'm crying for it," Dorcas said.
