Exhumation of Shakahola bodies resumes after two days suspension

Detectives from the Homicide Unit unit have resumed the exhumation of bodies in the Shakahola forest where followers of controversial preacher Paul Mackenzie are believed to have been buried after fasting to death.

By Saturday, 201 bodies had been exhumed since the process started.

It is believed there are many bodies still buried in shallow graves in the forest.

Earlier, Coast regional commissioner Rhoda Onyancha said 610 people have been reported missing at the tracing centre as of Saturday.

On Sunday security personnel conducting a search and rescue operation in the 800-acre forest rescued nine people.

Among those rescued were five children.

Onyancha in her daily briefing said one person was arrested during the operation.

"Among those rescued also are four adults three female and one male," she said then.

The regional commissioner said three of the victims in critical condition were rushed to Malindi Sub County Hospital.
