Alliance for Science to host climate action conference on waste management

This conference is the first of its kind and is expected to contribute to locally led climate change actions for Africa.

The Alliance for Science is set to host a regional conference on climate action on waste management in Nairobi.

The conference which will be among a series of regional conferences comes after they signed a partnership with Taka taka ni Mali, under its program called Transform.

Transform, which is a collaboration between the Foreign and Commonwealth Development Office (FCDO), Unilever, and Ernst and Young).

Speaking during the signing ceremony held at Trademark Hotel, Alliance for Science executive director, Dr Sheila Ochugboju said there is an urgent need for Africa to address waste management challenges.

“According to the Africa waste management report 2022, there is an urgent need for African countries to address current waste management challenges and to prepare for the expected growth in waste generation in the coming century," she said.

"We as the Global South have solutions to waste management that the Global North can learn from, as we strive to balance the needs of people, planet and sustainable legacies for future generations.” 

The conference themed Promoting Effective Waste Management Practices for Environmental Conservation and Climate Change Mitigation will be held between June 6 to June 8, 2023, the of the UN-Habitat General Assembly meeting.

The conference is aimed at identifying policy and regulatory priorities for sustainable waste management and showcasing innovative approaches to commercialising sustainable waste management.

It will also seek to demonstrate the use of technology in sustainable waste management and adopt a plan of action for green financing investments in sustainable waste management.

According to Takataka ni Mali Patron, Mary Ngechu, the conference will unite government institutions, private sector actors, development partners, and finance organisations to develop necessary regional commitments to scale best-practice sustainable waste management models.

This conference is the first of its kind and is expected to contribute to locally-led climate change actions for Africa.
