Universities have until Tuesday, May 9, to declare the cost of their academic programmes in adherence to President William Ruto's directive.

In a letter to all vice chancellors and principals of university constituent colleges, the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service, however, said cost of accommodation and meals is exempt from the directive.

"In light of the foregoing, this is to request you to disclose information on the cost of academic programmes in your institutions," CEO Mercy Wahome said in the letter dated May 5.

"Kindly submit this information in the prescribed format to [email protected] by Tuesday, 9th May 2023."

The information is to be submitted in a duly filled Excel template and a scanned PDF of the duly filled template attached with a forwarding letter addressed to the CEO.

Wahome said KUCCPS will publish all programmes and warned that the government was only going to fund students who selected programmes in public universities.

"Therefore, students who will select programmes in private universities and TVET programmes offered by universities will not get government scholarships and will only be eligible to apply for HELB loan," she said.

On Wednesday, Ruto ordered the higher learning institutions to disclose the cost of their degree programmes.

He spoke during the unveiling of the new university education and funding model.

The President said the new model of funding will take effect at the beginning of the 2023/24 financial year.

It is set to benefit the new cohort of 173,127 students that will be joining universities and 145,325 students who will be joining TVET institutions.
