The African Union has called on countries around the world to offer their assistance in dealing with the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Sudan.

African Union Commission chairperson Moussa Faki Mahamat in a statement on Thursday said, there was an ever-present need for countries to come together and provide any form of aid that is needed by the citizens of Sudan during this crisis.

“The Chairperson of the AU Commission appeals to the neighbouring states of Sudan and the international community to speedily extend humanitarian support to civilians fleeing the conflict in Sudan,” the statement read.

Mahamat expressed grave concern over the plight of innocent civilians who have been caught up in the conflict and are stranded across the country.

“The chairperson renews the call on Sudan’s neighbours, relevant regional and global agencies to facilitate the transit and safety of civilians crossing their borders without impediment,” the statement read.

He called on the warring parties in Sudan to come together and provide room for dialogue that will be geared towards ending the increased bouts of conflict in the country.

“The chairperson reiterates his appeal to the Sudan Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces to immediately agree on a permanent ceasefire to facilitate the delivery of humanitarian assistance to Sudanese in dire need,” the statement read.

The violence represents a power struggle between the country’s military, led by General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and the paramilitary group Rapid Support Forces led by General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, often referred to as Hemedti.

The pair were respectively leader and deputy leader of a transitional government which was supposed to hand over to a civilian administration after the 2019 ousting of the former president, Omar al-Bashir.

The vicious power struggle between both groups has led to violence across the country and heavy bombardment in the capital city, with hundreds killed and thousands more injured.

Several countries including Kenya have evacuated diplomats and their citizens from Sudan as fierce fighting continues to rage in the capital Khartoum.

The Ministry of Foreign and Diaspora Affairs on Wednesday night evacuated 342 civilians who were trapped in Sudan following the ongoing conflict.

The ministry announced that a special multi-agency team was created to facilitate entry, departure, transit, and movement within Kenya of affected staff and dependants.

“The government through the Ministry of Foreign and Diaspora Affairs last night facilitated the evacuation of more nationals and personnel of United Nations, Agencies, the Diplomatic Corps, and International and Regional Organizations accredited to Nairobi who were trapped in the Sudan conflict,” the ministry tweeted on Thursday.
