The Kisumu County government has confirmed an outbreak of cholera in the area.

Health CEC Gregory Ganda told the Star that five cases have been reported.

The epicentre for the outbreak is in Nyalenda A and Nyalenda B.

Ganda said the department is closely following and investigating suspected diarrhoea cases in Kanyakwar, Kachok, Capital, Mamboleo, Liberton and Kapuothe.

Cholera is a highly contagious bacterial disease that causes severe diarrhoea, dehydration and in severe cases, death.

The bacteria is spread through contaminated food and water.

"We urge all residents to remain vigilant and tame precautions measures to avoid contracting cholera."

Ganda noted that the county has taken measures to contain the outbreak by providing clean and safe water for drinking and cooking in the affected areas at the same time enforcing hygiene practices.

He urged all residents to remain vigilant and take precautionary measures to avoid contracting cholera.

He said they should maintain high standards of personal hygiene including washing hands with soap and water before and after visiting the toilet and before eating.

Residents, the CEC said should treat or boil all water for drinking and at the same time maintain proper use of toilets for safe disposal of human waste.

"Residents should seek immediate medical care at the nearest health facility for acute watery diarrhoea and vomiting."

Ganda also told locals to avoid street food and ensure that all food is properly cooked and served to them hot.

He further stated that the Department of public health officers will from Monday be more vigilant and will re-inspect all eateries and food outlets to ensure that they meet the necessary hygiene and sanitation standards.

He said they will also control all social gatherings to ensure high standards of sanitation.
