President William Ruto on Tuesday personally apologised to the Eastleigh Business community whose property was destroyed during the Azimio protests.

He said the same will not be repeated and that their businesses are protected.

“Poleni ule rafiki yangu naskikia alikuja huko kwenu akaandamana na watu ambao walikuja wakaaribu mali yenu na kuibia nyinyi masimu ,” Ruto said.

This translates to: I’m sorry, I heard my friend (Raila Odinga) came to your place of business with demonstrators who destroyed your property and stole your phones.

The Head of State assured the traders that the matter was put to rest and will be resolved in Parliament through bipartisan talks.

This translates to: I want to assure you that God has helped us to resolve this matter, everything will be solved in Parliament," Ruto said.

Ruto was speaking on Tuesday night when he joined the Muslim community for an Iftar dinner at KICC together with other leaders.

The Eastleigh area was among the place affected during the first Azimio-led protest on March 20, 2023.

After Opposition chief Raila Odinga's convoy passed through the areas, the demonstrators engaged the police in running battles while others took advantage of the situation to loot and destroy property.

Defence CS Aden Duale had earlier warned the Opposition that he will not allow people to lose their properties in the name of protests.

Duale asked Raila to avoid Eastleigh if he has to protest, saying that every time his demos passed through Eastleigh, properties and businesses are destroyed.
