A law limiting how a Prime Minister can be declared unfit for office was on Thursday passed by the Israeli Parliament.

The law was part of bills being rooted by Israeli government in its bid to install massive changes in Judiciary.

In the overwhelming vote of 61 against 41, the lawmakers approved the bill that only the prime minister or the cabinet, with a two-thirds majority, can declare the leader unfit.

However, if the government goes the Cabinet way, the vote would then need to be ratified by a super majority in the parliament.

“The authority to declare the Prime Minister incapacitated will only belong to the government or the Knesset and will only occur due to physical or mental incapacity,” a statement read.

According to CNN, critics in the country have seen the bill as a move to shield Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who is currently facing an ongoing corruption trial.

Earlier this month, mass protests rocked Israel over the government’s plan presses to overhaul the judicial system.

The clashes between police and protesters who blocked a major highway in Tel Aviv persisted last week.

According to BBC, the protests have continued to grow since Netanyahu returned to power at the end of last year, leading the most right-wing, nationalist coalition in Israel's history and promising to curb the powers of the judiciary.

The changes would give the government full control over the committee which appoints judges and would ultimately strip the Supreme Court of crucial powers to strike down legislation.

BBC reported that Netanyahu says the reforms are designed to stop the courts from overreaching their powers and that they were voted for by the public at the last election.
