Former Nairobi governor Evans Kidero has said that Kenyans should stand against plans by the opposition to paralyse the economy.

Kidero said violence and destruction of property witnessed in Kisumu and Nairobi outraged many businesses.

"I recognize this disturbing pattern as part of a larger, systematic organised cultic group that infests our country," he said.

"My heart goes out to the victims of these and other acts of wanton violence and it is extremely unfortunate that persons whom Kenyans look up to in terms of guidance and leadership could mobilize populations to riot, loot and destroy properties under the guise of peaceful demonstrations."

He added that whereas demonstrations and picketing are democratic rights, it is unacceptable to see leaders abandon their role to inspire hope and show decorum, and instead resort to organizing and financing mayhem.

"What we witnessed yesterday was an assembly of hired goons who took the opportunity to injure, maim and violently rob their fellow citizens as they executed their orgy of violence, looting and destruction of property," Kidero said.

He condemned the violence in Kisumu that saw UDA offices vandalised.

He said Kenyans must stand together as a nation and take action to change this situation of intolerance.

"We must stand out to condemn in the strongest possible terms these acts of selfish desire to suffocate the economy. The urge for change is palpable and just," Kidero said.

The former governor said that all who planned, organised and participated in the riots must be held accountable.

He urged Kenyans to pray for the country for peace to settle throughout the nation.
