Kenyans react as Sakaja announces Sh2m gift for choir winner

Kenyans on Twitter have come out in large numbers to express their views on Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja’s statement.

On Saturday, Sakaja announced a competition for religious choirs in Nairobi which will attract a winner’s gift of Sh2 million.

In a statement, the competition will take place at the Kenya International Conference Centre (KICC) during the Easter holidays.

"Planning is in high gear, let's celebrate the season in style. This Easter, KICC, plus food, fun, and games for the kids. The vibe of the City," Sakaja hyped the event.

"This Easter, the battle of the choirs is on. Winning choir gets Sh2 million,” he added.

Sakaja noted that more details of the event including registration will be announced in due course to give choirs ample time to prepare.

The event comes three months after the first Nairobi Festival was held at Uhuru Park in December,2022.

However, the choir of the battle received mixed reactions from Kenyans on Twitter.

“I am not saying this idea is bad, however, why can't we promote what really matters? Like why not an innovative showdown? Let us get out of this mediocrity,” said Mark.

“Go pay school fees/food for the needy kids in slums with that money...church choir ya nini sasa?” Marylyne Ochieng posed.

“Battle of the Choirs was a family event some years back... We ensured dinner was served early so that we could all watch as Choirs moved to the next level while others were eliminated. It's the premier league for the churches,” Mary Ngaruma.
