2,000 Starehe housing units to benefit poor families – PS Hinga

The selling price for the units will be starting from Sh1.155 million.

Low-income families will occupy 2,000 of the 6,700 Affordable Housing Units that will be constructed in Starehe, Nairobi.

Housing PS Charles Hinga said during the groundbreaking ceremony on Monday that the houses have been categorised as social houses.

"Social housing is those set aside for people at the lower tier," Hinga said.

President William Ruto launched the groundbreaking ceremony saying beneficiaries will pay between Sh3,000 to Sh4,000 and eventually own the houses after about 20 years. 

It's Ruto's 5th affordable housing project this year after Homa Bay, Ruiru, Kibera and Shauri Moyo.

PS Hinga said the Affordable Housing project, the latest under the Kenya Kwanza regime, sits on 22 acres of land.

He said it initially held 370 housing units but will now be converted to 6,700 units.

"The number of jobs that will be created here will be unprecedented. This programme epitomises your bottom-up economic model," Hinga said.

He said investors have pumped Sh13 billion into the project.

Among them is businessman Suleiman Shahbal who said they will help street traders get shops. 

"More than 10,000 people will get jobs here. The estate we will construct here will be the pride of Nairobi. Mr Sakaja one day you will thank me," he said.
