Counterfeit authority seizes goods worth Sh50m at China Square

Says they bore "FINDER" trademark belonging to Kenya's M/s Smithmo Company Limited.

The Anti-Counterfeit Authority on Tuesday revealed that it seized counterfeited goods worth Sh50 million at China Square Mall over a week ago.

The authority said in a statement the seizure followed a complaint over the branding of the goods with "Finder", the registered trademark of M/s Smithmo Company Limited.

The goods include hardware materials and tools owned by the brand owner.

"The Authority's Enforcement Directorate acted promptly on the complaint and conducted an inspection on 16/2/2023 at the China Square Mall, leading to in-situ seizures of goods with an approximate value of Sh50 million," the statement read.

The Authority said that it is committed to fulfilling its mandate of protecting intellectual property rights and promoting fair trade practices in Kenya.

It encouraged the registration of trademarks, patents, copyrights, and designs, which provides legal protection to the owners and creates incentives for further innovation.

China Square Mall has in the past few days made headlines with alleged unfair business practices topping the list.

The uproar online prompted the retail outlet to close shop indefinitely on Sunday to review its business model. 

The company said in a statement this includes the establishment of robust security measures to handle the high traffic of customers.

The giant retail outlet located at Unicity Mall on Thika Road stocks the most affordable items.

Traders in the CBD on Tuesday held protests over the alleged unfair practices over the low prices which they feel has robbed them customers. 

Trade CS Kuria in a statement on Friday that as much as Kenya welcomes Chinese investors, they should be here as manufacturers, not traders.
