Government to set up a museum in Eldoret that will be dubbed ‘Museum 1:59’
Principal Secretary for Culture & Heritage Ummi Bashir on Wednesday explained that Kipchoge is considered a hero for Kenya.
"Kipchoge is going for the Boston Marathon and it's a different experience for him. This will also be a passionate time for Kenyans as we are proud of one of our own," she said.
The PS explained that Kenya is known for sports and is considered a part of the country's heritage. He noted that the government is planning on supporting and sustaining Kenya's heritage.
Bashir also noted that Kipchoge is part of the Heroes Council board which is under her department.
In October 2019, Kipchoge broke the two-hour marathon barrier at the Ineos 1:59 challenge in Vienna.
He ran 1:59:40 to complete the 26.2 mile distance in the fastest time in history.
Prior to 2019, Kipchoge was the holder of the official marathon World Record, a time of 2:01:39 set at the Berlin Marathon in 2018.
He won eight World Marathon Majors and took marathon gold in Rio at the 2016 Olympic Games.
This year, Kipchoge hopes to make history as the only athlete to win all the marathon majors.
While unveiling his murals in Eldoret early this year, the world record holder said his next stop will be Boston in April before closing the season with the New York Marathon later in the year.

He said winning Boston and eventually New York City Marathon will be great.
