The police chief spoke of machete cuts to the neck and the heads of the victims in the heinous act that rattled the sleepy village.

The children's mother had already left for the farm when the father swung the machete on their necks.

They were aged 10 months and two and a half years respectively.

Villagers suspect the Momanyi had mental health problems and often tormented his family.

He was in and out of the hospital in the recent past, said one villager.

The last medical visit was two months ago at Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital.

Residents said they even raised some cash for his medication.

Kipkulei said the information provided would form part of the probe as detectives dig through to unravel the motive of the killing.

"Whether he had a mental problem or not will be ascertained by medical experts, already we have the suspect in custody," said the regional police boss.
