The Senate is on Friday set to hold a special sitting to deliberate on embattled Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza's fate.

Senate Speaker Amason Kingi on Wednesday gazetted December 30 for the sitting.

"Notice is given to all Senators on the request of the Senate Majority Leader and with the support of the requisite number of Senators, I have appointed Friday, 30th December, 2022, as a day for a special sitting of the Senate," Kingi said.

The sitting will be held in the Senate Chamber, Main Parliament Buildings from 2.30pm.

During the special sitting, the House will consider a report of the Special Committee on the proposed removal from office, by impeachment, of the Governor of Meru County.

The panel chaired by Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale will conclude hearings on Wednesday before retreating to write its verdict.

If the committee finds the governor guilty of any of the charges, the  panel will table its report for voting by the plenary of the whole House.

Should the committee clear Mwangaza of all the charges, the proposed impeachment will have failed and the governor will remain in office.

Kawira was on December 14 impeached by 67 of the 69 MCAs that were present in the Meru County Assembly.

The ward reps accused the governor of gross misconduct and abuse of office, all broken down to five charges.

On Tuesday, Kawira pleaded not guilty to the charges before the special committee saying she is a victim of blackmail.

The MCAs accused her of committing at least one constitutional violation on each of the 64 days she has been in power.

They said within that period, Kawira committed 62 violations of the Constitution.
